What Level are You
as a Leader?

or as a Parent?
or as a Trainer?

THE BAD NEWS

Most leaders today are at Level 1 or Level 2. Which level are you?

A Level 1 leader follows the fads. That's not a leader at all. By definition, that's a follower! Are you a follower under the delusion you're a leader?

A Level 2 leader leads with answers. Such a leader spoon-feeds direct reports with lots of answers … instructions, procedures, policies, rules, laws, techniques, scripts, "do this, don't do that," methods, etc.

It's not surprising that almost all leaders are Level 1 or Level 2. After all, that's how leaders are trained themselves these days.

The vast majority of trainers today (which includes authors, speakers, gurus, "experts," and bloggers and vloggers) are Low-Level trainers (Level 1 or Level 2).

And they train you to become a Low-Level leader.

They train you with answers about leadership — leadership "techniques," leadership "best practices," leadership "traits," and "leadership do's and don'ts."

If you think about it, you'll realize that mainstream leadership trainers actually model the way for you to be stuck at Level 1 or Level 2.

They teach you answers. And, as a result, you believe that leading with answers is the way to great leadership.

But what exactly is wrong with leading, learning and training with answers? After all, everyone is doing it. This is how we've always done it, haven't we?

How could most people be so wrong?

Read on.

In Good to Great, Jim Collins introduced the concept of a Level 5 Leader. A defining characteristic of a Level 5 Leader is, instead of feeding answers, they lead by asking questions.

But … very few leaders today are Level 5. How many leaders do you know who lead with questions?

How about you? Do you lead by asking questions? Or do you spoon-feed answers?

THE REALLY BAD NEWS

In any case, it doesn't matter that most leaders are stuck at Level 1 or 2 and nowhere near being a Level 5 Leader. Because Level 5 is beyond obsolete.

It's not enough to be a Level 5 Leader. It's not enough to lead by asking questions.

Why not?

Marshall Goldsmith explains why leading by asking questions (Level 5) is not enough.

He explains that Level 5 leaders — the very few that actually lead with questions — ask questions merely to gather facts. Goldsmith calls this information-seeking questions.

What he says is necessary is you ask questions that stimulate curiosity and nurture understanding. He calls this understanding-seeking questions.

So …

To become a Level 10 Leader, all you have to do is ask your direct reports understanding-seeking questions?

Not quite. Read on.

In today's rapidly-evolving business environment, you need your team to be firing on all cylinders without prompting from you.

This means you must go beyond "leading by asking questions." You most go beyond asking understanding-seeking questions to stimulate the thinking of your direct-reports.

You must actively develop/coach/mentor your people to ask understanding-seeking questions themselves. So that they stimulate their own thinking. So that they become naturally curious and acutely observant. On their own.

The greatest sign of success for a teacher … is to be able to say, "The students are now working as if I did not exist."

Maria Montessori

Only then will you be a Level 10 Leader.

THE GOOD NEWS

Becoming a Level 10 leader is your surest and only true way to fully engage your people and bring out their inherent creativity and resourcefulness — and infuse true vitality throughout your organization.

When you become a Level 10 Leader, Employee Engagement and Innovation (and a whole lot else) are the result. No extra effort required.

So, scrap your Employee Engagement initiatives. Throw away your Innovation training programs. Devote yourself to becoming a Level 10 leader instead. Then, enjoy the resulting fruits of highly-engaged, highly-innovative, highly-effective employees.

The world's truly great leaders, parents, teachers, coaches and mentors develop their mentees to excel as though the leader, parent, teacher, coach or mentor didn't exist.

THE REALLY GOOD NEWS

Becoming a Level 10 leader is actually easier and faster than remaining a Level 1 or Level 2 leader or even a Level 5 Leader.

How can that be?

As to methods there may be a million and then some, but principles are few. The man who grasps principles can successfully select his own methods. The man who tries methods, ignoring principles, is sure to have trouble.

Emerson

When you spoon-feed your employees with methods and techniques, you have to train them with a lot of techniques. You have to inundate them with instructions and policies and procedures and manuals and rules. All this is arduous and time-consuming. It's a lot of hard work. It requires a lot of repetition and regurgitation.

On the other hand, when you develop them to consider understanding-seeking questions themselves, you only have to do so with a handful of questions.

With just a handful of questions, the transformation in the organization begins almost immediately.

Once you transform yourself from Level 1 or Level 5 … to Level 10, it is possible to see a highly-motivated, highly-energized, highly-innovative organization within weeks, rather than months or years.

EXCELLENT NEWS

There's just a handful of questions.

You develop your direct reports to ask themselves this small handful of questions to get them firing on all cylinders.

And you also learn to ask yourself these very same questions so that you excel in leadership, innovation, execution, strategy, selling, presentations, etc.

77,196 people
can't be wrong

Hello. This is Aman Motwane, founder of Only1List.

I still remember when I first started talking in public about the simple concepts underlying Only1List. The enthusiasm was so strong, people would walk up to me and stuff cash and checks and credit cards into my hands even though I insisted I didn't have a program yet to offer them.

I wanted to discourage them. I didn't want their money until I was ready. So, I started quoting them exorbitantly high prices. But even this didn't stop them. Before I knew it, I had nearly a thousand pre-paid reservation orders in my hands.

Since then, 77,196 individuals have trained themselves with these concepts.

And those 77,196 run the gamut — corporate executives and professionals ... individuals seeking deeper relationships ... spiritual seekers ... even those seeking to change the world.

This is the best proof that Only1List gets to the core of everything — business, professional, personal and spiritual.

Now, backed by the enthusiasm of those original 77,196 people, I've made Only1List available online.
